Fascia, soffit and why they rot
The fascia is the board along the eaves that carries the gutter. The soffit closes the underside between the fascia and the wall. On older houses both are timber, and once the paint goes, water gets in and they rot, often because a gutter has leaked against them for years.
Replacement is usually uPVC: full replacement boards fixed to the rafter ends, or thin cover boards over sound timber. Ask which one is being priced, and check the felt at the eaves while the boards are off.
