What's gone wrong
- Nail fatigue: iron nails rust through after decades and the slate slides. One slipped slate on an old roof is rarely the only weak one.
- Cracked slates: frost, a ladder, or someone walking on the roof.
- Storm lift: wind gets under a loose slate and takes its neighbours.
- Valleys and lead: split or short lead lets water past even when the slates are fine.
